Panama Beach (Playa Panama) is a short distance away from Hermosa Beach (Playa Hermosa), on the southern point of Culebra Bay, is Panamá Beach (Playa Panamá), a dark-sand beach that offers a choice of moderately priced to luxurious lodging.  Here you can take a stroll on the beach under the swaying brazilwood, sarno, and mesquite trees, or take a hike inland to the village of Panamá along the solitary dirt road.  The beach is great for swimming, as the surf is calm south of Culebra Bay.

Playa Panama Information

For better of worse, this fine-sand beach overlooks the north cusp of Culebra Bay (Bahía Culebra) and its booming development.  The massive Papagayo Project with its goal of developing a 2,300-acre, $400 million worth of luxurious hotel accommodations—currently under construction—is certainly in plain view from Panamá Beach.

Once a remote beach with very little in way of development, Panamá Beach has metamorphosized in recent decades as the Papagayo region continues to boom.  The new addition of the splendid Four Seasons Hotel, complete with its first-class golf course designed by Arnold Palmer, is the epitome of Panamá’s luxury Resorts, which extend up and down the coastline, surrounded by opulent homes and sheik condominiums.  North American retirees are ubiquitous, but locals have adapted to the large presence of foreigners who fuel the northern Guanacaste’s economy.

This 1 mile (2 km) beach is ideal for visitors seeking some quality rest and relaxation.  Panamá Beach’s rock free, smooth, grainy sand is the perfect setting to lie out and soak up some sun amidst the swaying palms.  Swimming conditions are idyllic, as ocean tides are often low and the break calm.  Papagayo’s abundant good weather makes for incredibly good water recreation conditions, whether sailing, Scuba Diving or sportfishing.

As is characteristic of luxury resort towns, services are extensive and often cater to the affluent.  The latest fashions can be had at Panama’s numerous boutiques as can the best in Costa Rican and foreign cuisine at one of town’s fabulous, although pricy, restaurants.

Numerous national Parks lie within close proximity to Panamá Beach, including the famous Rincón de la Vieja National Park (Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja), Palo Verde National Park (Parque Nacional Palo Verde) and Santa Rosa National Park (Parque Nacional Santa Rosa) to name a few.

Panamá Beach’s close proximity to Liberia’s Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport facilitates seamless travel from abroad or elsewhere in Costa Rica.  From Liberia the road to Panamá is well paved to further ease travel.  Nearby Hermosa Beach and Coco Beaches (Playas del Coco) are a mere five minute drive by paved road.
