The Palo Verde National Park is both a spectacular wetland and one of the best examples of tropical dry forests remaining anywhere in the world. It sits on the banks of Lake Tempisque in the Gulf of Nicoya. The park is best known as a bird watchers paradise and sanctuary for the resident and migrating water fowl and forest birds. There are three trails that lead through this tropical forest and marshland to view points, stone caves, and large waterholes that are great for watching local wildlife.

The park's Research and Ranger Station offers lodging as well as camping options. Day trippers may opt to stay in the nearby agricultural town of Cañas where you’ll find simple lodgings and a variety of restaurants. While in town explore the nearby Rio Corobici for a rafting trip or visit the Las Pumas animal refuge housing cats such as pumas, Jaguars and Ocelots.

North of Palo Verde is the city of Liberia offering a host of Hotels, restaurants, bars, museums, an international airport and much more. This is an excellent gateway to exploring the many stunning Beaches of Guanacaste as well as the varying National Parks in the Northwestern Zone.
